Michelin Guide praises ‘new generation’ of Philippines chefs
MANILA, Philippines — The “new generation of chefs” in the Philippines inspired the prestigious Michelin Guide to confer various distinctions on a total of 108 restaurants and eateries in the country, according to its official.
“What sets the Philippines apart is the new generation of chefs. Many are under 30 years old. Some hone their skills abroad or at home. And together, they are shaping a new era for modern Filipino cuisine – innovative yet rooted, contemporary yet unmistakably Filipino,” said Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec.
He added that the Filipino brand of hospitality also contributed to the inclusion of these establishments in the esteemed Michelin Guide.
“The warmth and genuine care of the Filipino people is woven into every experience, whether in a casual eatery or a fine dining establishment. It always leaves a lasting impression,” he said.
Poullennec thanked the Department of Tourism (DOT) and other partners for supporting the Michelin Guide, saying their collaboration helped “make the Filipino culinary scene shine.”
During the launch of the Michelin Guide 2026 in Manila, nearby cities and Cebu on Oct. 30, one fine-dining restaurant received two Michelin stars, eight others earned one Michelin star each and one was honored with the Michelin Green Star.
Additionally, 25 restaurants were recognized with the inaugural Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction, while 74 others – including local eateries or karinderya – were listed as Michelin Selected.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said the arrival of the Michelin Guide in the Philippines “marks a milestone in our journey to transform tourism through culture and Filipino identity.”
She added that the initiative is part of the DOT’s efforts to promote gastronomy as a pillar of Philippine tourism under the National Tourism Development Plan.
“The Department of Tourism’s strategic partnership with Michelin builds upon this vision, affirming our commitment to elevate the Philippines as a global destination for cultural and culinary excellence – grounded in authenticity and sustained by our diversity,” said Garcia-Frasco.
