MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that all the major telecommunications and internet service industry players are on board in drawing up the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for the Konektadong Pinoy Act, which lapsed into law on Aug. 24.
ICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda said that Globe Telecom and the PLDT-Smart group had nominated their representatives to the committee formed by the DICT to take the lead in drawing up and completing the IRR.
Until the formal response to the invitation to send their representatives from the DICT, only Dito Telecommunity and fiber internet service provider Converge ICT Solutions were the only major stakeholders to have expressed support to the DICT push to draw up the IRR for the law.
The DICT has set itself a tight deadline to finish the IRR, having given itself up to the end of this month to finish the document.
The DICT has trumpeted the new law as a legislation that aims to ensure universal, reliable and affordable internet for every Filipino.
In a recent interview, Aguda clarified that the September deadline was an optimistic timeframe and they will extend it if necessary if “the stakeholders have more inputs.”
