Tagle slams greed behind flood control anomalies

MANILA, Philippines — The Vatican’s pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle yesterday took a swipe at those involved in corruption as widespread flooding continued to affect the country.

“The known big, great metropolitan cities became seas even with slight rains because of humans and their  lack of responsibility,” Tagle said during his homily on the formal declaration of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in Rizal.

Tagle’s remarks came in the wake of controversies involving billions of pesos in flood control projects.

“When greed takes over, the land suffers, the seas are ruined, creation is destroyed and even our livelihoods vanish. And when corruption is added to greed, what it bears is not life, but thorns,” he added.

Tagle is back in the Philippines for the declaration of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu.

Pope Leo XIV earlier appointed him as the new titular bishop of Albano, a suburbicarian diocese the pontiff himself once held before his election.
