MANILA, Philippines — Detained former president Rodrigo Duterte insisted he has no regrets over his actions while in office as he continues to face charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands.

In an interview posted on the Facebook page of his former spokesman Harry Roque, Duterte’s youngest daughter Veronica, also known as Kitty, said her father “is doing OK” as supporters continue to gather outside his detention cell.

“He says, no regrets and no apologies. He did what he could for this country,” Kitty said.

The former president’s daughter also shared lighthearted details of her recent visit, saying her father was happy to hear that the family was doing well despite his absence.

“When he sat down, the first thing he did was compliment my duster because I didn’t have time. I was quite sick so he complimented my duster because it’s the same one that I used to wear when we would sleep beside each other. So, I think it kind of gave him a glimpse of home,” she said. “He sends his warm love and regards, and his gratitude.”

Kitty said her father continues to worry about her health, checking on her after she went to the pharmacy for medication.

“He said, as long as I’m doing OK, he’s fine,” she added.

Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte, who is currently in Kuwait, said her father is seeking interim release under the Rome Statute, which allows temporary freedom for ICC detainees who can meet certain requirements.

She added that the former president has no intention of evading justice and simply wishes to return to his hometown of Davao City if released.

Duterte was arrested on March 11 and turned over to the ICC. His legal team is now preparing for the confirmation of charges hearing on Sept. 23.
