Have an idea? Visit iHubs, says DOST chief

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is confident it can open one innovation hub (iHub) in every province by 2028, to accommodate any Filipino with a scientific or entrepreneurial idea.

Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. inaugurated the 48th iHub here at the agency’s local office along Governor Pack Road..

Solidum said the agency envisions a network of iHubs across provinces to fill what he called the “missing link” in the innovation ecosystem.

“We’re building an ecosystem – facilities that will cater to the idea and actual conversion of the idea into reality – while establishing facilities that will help specific sectors of our society,” he said.

Solidum said most DOST programs target innovations and start-ups that are already developed and ready for implementation or commercialization.

The iHub, he said, will serve anyone, from students to entrepreneurs, who has an idea that could be adapted or patented in any field.

“We are not strict here, so everyone is invited,” Solidum said.

Persons visiting iHubs will receive assistance from local DOST officials, who will connect them with relevant agencies and partners. An idea that requires research, for instance, will be linked to a state university or college.

“Our role is to establish, facilitate and pass on,” Solidum said. “This is really for everyone; this is really an iHub that starts from below.”

The DOST will launch an AI or artificial intelligence chatbot in October to help Filipinos determine if their ideas have already been developed or can be adapted to existing innovations.
