Red Cross seeks blood donations

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) raised yesterday an urgent appeal for blood donations amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis.
Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the PRC, said there is a looming shortage of blood in the country for patients, including accident victims.
“We need your help. Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in our country, there are persons in hospitals now who are badly in need of blood transfusions like cancer patients, accident victims, people with blood disorders, mothers who are giving birth, and so many others, and with a limited supply of blood nationwide, we are in danger of running out,” he pointed out.
The PRC, he added, is “asking everyone to come out and volunteer to donate blood and save lives.”
Gordon urged those willing to donate blood to schedule their donations through 09174379377 as travel remains difficult and precautions must be taken by donors as Luzon remains under enhanced community quarantine.
Those in the provinces could contact their nearest PRC chapter to coordinate.
“Your spirit of volunteerism and resilience will help out many in need,” Gordon said.
