MANILA, Philippines — Placing the National Food Authority (NFA) under the Department of Agriculture (DA) should only be a temporary measure to stabilize prices and supply of rice, senators said yesterday.

Senators Sonny Angara and Sherwin Gatchalian in separate interviews made the statement after President Duterte last week issued Executive Order No. 62 placing the NFA as well as the Philippine Coconut Authority and Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority under the DA.

The senators said abolishing the NFA should be among the urgent moves to be implemented to ensure the country’s food security even as the government is shifting towards the tariffication of rice imports.
