MANILA, Philippines (Updated 5:02 p.m.) — The state weather bureau said Typhoon Jebi has entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday afternoon and was assigned the name "Maymay."
In an advisory earlier at 11 a.m., PAGASA said "Maymay" which was still outside PAR at that time has slightly weakened.
At 10 a.m., the typhoon was located 1,420 kilometers east of extreme northern outside PAR. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 190 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness up to 235 kph.
Despite the forecast that the typhoon would enter PAR, PAGASA weather specialist Gener Quitlong earlier Sunday said it would have no significant effects in the country aside from the enhancement of the southwest monsoon or "habagat."
Quitlong added that since "Maymay" hovers over the sea, there is a possibility that it would intensify into a super typhoon but would still not directly affect the country due to its far location.
The typhoon is seen to move north-northwest at 25 kph and is expected to exit PAR early Monday.
By Tuesday, Quitlong said the typhoon might head to Japan.
