MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area and a typhoon are moving closer to the Philippine area of responsibility and may enhance the southwest monsoon, the state weather bureau said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the low-pressure area was spotted 630 kilometers east of Guian, Eastern Samar.

It is unlikely to become a storm but will bring rains over the Visayas.

“Eastern Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms,” PAGASA said.

The weather bureau said Typhoon Jebi was still outside the Philippines at 2,275 kilometers east of northern Luzon with sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 197 kph.

If Jebi continues to move west-northwest, it may enter the Philippines on Sunday or Monday, weather forecasters said.

Although it is not expected to hit land, the typhoon may enhance the southwest monsoon.

PAGASA said Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands would experience rainshowers and thunderstorms.
