'Luis' weakens but continues to boost southwest monsoon
MANILA, Philippines —Tropical Depression Luis has weakened while slowly heading toward the west coast of Taiwan, state weather bureau PAGASA said Friday morning.
“Luis” was last seen 1,070 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes. It is moving west southwest at 7 kilometers per hour.
The tropical depression packs maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center from the previous 55 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 65 kilometers per hour from the previous 90 kilometers per hour.
Since Luis is not expected to directly affect any part of the country, no tropical cyclone warning signals have been raised.
But it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring scattered moderate to heavy rains in Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands until this weekend.
Sea travel is risky in the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, PAGASA warned.
“Luis” made landfall in Kaoshiung, Taiwan Thursday morning. Taiwan is inside the PAR given its proximity to the Philippines.
The tropical depression is expected to be outside PAR by Saturday morning.
The state weather bureau is also monitoring a low pressure area 1,070 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes. It may develop into a tropical storm within the next 24 to 48 hours.
