MANILA, Philippines — A plane from China skidded off a runway during landing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport before midnight on Friday, prompting the cancellation of some flights and the diversion of some others while the runway is closed for clearing operations.
The Manila International Airport Authority said all 157 passengers and crew of Xiamen Air flight MF8667 were evacuated from the plane and are safe. They were transported to a nearby hotel and will stay there until Xiamen Air operations resume, it also said.
NAIA's international runway 06/24 is closed because of the incident.
Eric Apolonio, spokesperson of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, told reporters that the aircraft will remain on the runway until probers finish an investigation in the incident. The runway will also have to be cleared of foreign objects and debris before it can be declared operational.
A Philippine News Agency report quotes MIAA Public Affairs Department OIC Ma. Consuelo Bungag as saying some international flights "using aircraft type A320 and below" can use NAIA's domestic runway in the meantime.
