Skywatchers advised of meteor shower before dawn Sunday

Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino skywatchers can witness about 20 or more shooting stars per hour before dawn tomorrow, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.

PAGASA said the Eta Aquarid meteor shower is best to observe only a few hours before dawn.

The moon, however, will probably wash out the comparatively faint meteor shower during its peak, according to the website space.com.

The Eta Aquarids is one of two meteor showers created by debris from Halley’s Comet, a short-period comet visible from earth every 74 to 79 years.

“The radiant of the meteor shower will virtually lie on the celestial equator and is more favorable to southern hemisphere viewers,” PAGASA said.

According to space.com, the Eta Aquarids do not produce as many meteors per hour as the more famous Perseid meteor shower in August, but they are just as bright, if not brighter.

The best way to see the meteors, according to space.com, is to lie flat on your back and look straight up.
