Korean wanted for $8M fraud arrested by Immigration
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration is set to deport a Korean wanted in Seoul for multi-million dollar fraud charges.
In a statement on Monday, the Immigration said that its Fugitive Search Unit arrested Jung Hyojin, 35, in Malate, Manila on February 22.
The Korean is currently detained at the Immigration facility in Bicutan, Taguig, pending deportation.
Jung is a subject of an Interpol red notice and three standing arrest warrants from Seoul central district courts. The Korean is facing a charge with a maximum jail term of 10 years, the Immigration said.
According to Immigration intelligence officer and FSU chief Bobby Raquepo, Jung headed the operations of a fraud call center that coerced victims to give their money after being harassed and intimidated by callers who pretended to be police investigators.
The fraud scheme ran for two years, from February 2013 to February 2015, and Jung's group received more than $8 million.
It was also learned that Jung's passport was canceled by the Korean government and he is an overstaying and undocumented alien in the country.
A check on the Immigrations database showed that Jung went to Manila on Feb. 23, 2015 and has not left the country since.
