MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte is considering buying a Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan, which is now being produced in the car manufacturer’s plant in Laguna.

While inspecting a unit of the Mirage G4, Duterte disclosed that he bought his eldest grandson a second-hand vehicle but the other siblings got jealous.

“I said not at the same time because I cannot afford it,” the President said during the unveiling of the car model yesterday in Malacañang.

The President then asked about the cost of the vehicle, noting that as a government official, he cannot accept gifts.

“How much is this? Baka (maybe),” he said.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. had started the local production of Mirage G4 in its 21-hectare plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Mitsubishi has invested P4.3 billion for the production facilities and equipment for the local production of the Mirage vehicles.

Mirage G4 is the first vehicle manufactured locally under the government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program.

CARS is a fiscal-capped, time-bound and performance-based program that aims to elevate the country’s automotive industry.

The government intends to give incentives to manufacturers who commit to manufacture 200,000 vehicles of their chosen model in six years.
