MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED)– A portion of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 ceiling on Thursday morning collapsed leaving one foreign passenger hurt, a radio report said.

An American passenger obtained minor injuries after a ceiling of Sweet Ideas Restaurant located at the pre-departure area of NAIA Terminal 3 fell down past 7 a.m..

A radio report said medical personnel immediately attended to the injured foreign passenger and he was already able to travel after the medical assistance.

Meanwhile, the restaurant was temporarily closed due to the incident.

Manila International Airport Authority spokesperson David de Castro said there is an ongoing investigation regarding the concessionaire, Sweet Ideas. He added that the concessionaire will be fined if proven that the materials used for the ceiling are substandard.

"The restaurant will remain closed until investigations and proper renovations are complete," De Castro said.

"Initial investigation shows that the materials used for the construction of that particular ceiling of the restaurant were weak," he added.

Sweet Ideas is also asked to pay the construction and damage caused by the disintegrating ceiling.

"Note that construction of the interiors of commercial spaces at the terminals is shouldered by the concessionaires themselves," De Castro said. –Rosette Adel
