Another Cebu Pacific flight makes bad landing

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - After a rough landing that left many of its passengers in panic earlier this month, another Cebu Pacific plane made another errant touchdown on Thursday afternoon, an airport official confirmed Friday.

Flight 5J-558 from Iloilo sideswiped the runway lighting at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 after it reportedly encountered a strong crosswind. No passengers were injured.

NAIA general manager Jose Angel Honrado said that the rough landing was caused by the inclement weather prevailing over Metro Manila on Thursday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is currently questioning the aircraft's pilot identified as Jay Palomillo.

Honrado said that the craft made a rough landing at 4:00 p.m. and damaged five lights along Runway 6 of the airport.

The Manila International Airport Authority, meanwhile, said that current weather conditions in Luzon and Visayas characterized by thunderstorms and heavy rain showers in the afternoon has so far affected eight flights.

The affected flights include three from the Cebu Pacific, which were canceled due to the bad weather. Five flights of the Philippine Airlines, including a Manila-Los Angeles trip, were diverted.

Earlier this month, a Cebu Pacific flight skidded off the runway at the Davao International Airport, stranding about 3,000 passengers for several days.

After investigating on the matter, the CAAP said that the crude landing that left its 165 passengers on board temporarily stuck inside the aircraft cabin was due to pilot error.
