MANILA, Philippines — For listeners, songs of their favorite singers serve as the soundtracks of their lives. But for singers, they may mark a turning point in their recording careers, as one may put it.
With new artist Kavi of the Ant Savvy Artist Management, the single, Ulan, signals the fulfillment of a dream or the beginning of a new season to venture into recording.
It’s a welcome addition to the ever-thriving Original Pilipino Music (OPM), fueled by established names and newbies.
“It’s pop with a bit of a touch of rock,” said he of his debut song in a brief chat with The STAR. “We made (and composed) it for three months, while the production took two months. That’s five months (of work), and it will be released on Nov. 14.”
Yes, finally, Kavi has a song of his own after doing covers or interpreting songs of local and international artists such as Rivermaya and Justin Bieber. And Ulan will definitely be a part of his repertoire every time Kavi has a gig at a bar or a club in the metro, like Quezon City.
“Para po siya sa tao na gusto na niyang mayakap at makasama ang mahal niya, ganun po (it’s for someone who wants to embrace and to be with his or her loved one),” shared he about the theme of the song and the inspiration behind it. “Para sa mga (taong nasa) long-distance relationship (it’s also for those who are in a long-distance relationship).”
Kavi added that “Kapag umuulan, gusto mong mag-senti sa may bintana (when it’s raining, the weather somehow invites you to become sentimental, you know, by the window). Tapos, kunyari di mo kasama ang mahal mo sa buhay, tapos yung weather parang malungkot (then you pretend and imagine that you’re not being with someone you love and the weather seems sad). So, ayun po ‘kung umuulan, nais kitang mayakap nang walang hanggan (then the lyric goes, ‘It’s raining and I want to embrace you forever).”
According to a piece of information, Ulan is a mellow and catchy pop track, produced by Shadiel Chan, who also helmed the chart-topping hit Multo of Cup of Joe. The song is “a tender exploration of longing in a long-distance relationship” and “wanting nothing more than to bridge the gap and hold the one you love close,” it added.
His Facebook post says it is released under Unstable Records.
As a young creative, Kavi also co-writes with artist friends and listens to their inputs. He is for a collaborative process.
“Pero yung Ulan po, mostly ako po yung nagsulat (but with this song, I mostly did the writing),” said he.
Away from the recording studios and performing venues, Kavi is an entrepreneur and an athlete. His sport is practical shooting.
“Nung bata po ako nag-Center for Pop po ako, yung mga workshops (as a kid, I did Center for Pop and attended workshops there),” recalled he how his enthusiasm in singing was ignited and nurtured. “Nag-pe-perform po ako sa mall (I performed in a mall as part of the learning activity), I was like around nine or 10 years old. My family likes music, such as my aunt, my mom, my grandmother and my uncle. They sing, and they are the ones who introduced me to music.”
Kavi has followed in their musical footsteps, and he is now focused on his singing career.
After the release of Ulan, Kavi has new songs to unveil and share with everyone.
“Meron pa po akong isang kanta, ang title niya ay Moments (I have another song, which is titled Moments). Tapos nag-co-co-write po ako with my friend for three more songs (then, there are three more songs which I’m co-writing with a friend),” said he. “Balak ko po na next year, maka-complete at least na five songs (and next year, I plan to complete at least five songs).”
Asked how he describes himself as a singer, Kavi said, “Ako po kasi yung taong ganun, sentimental ganyan, I’m also a bit emotional (I’m the kind of person who is sentimental and a bit emotional).”
And the single, Ulan, is the beginning of recording and churning out heartfelt and reflective songs for Kavi, the new artist.
