The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Will Gwen break our hearts?

MANILA, Philippines - One of the most highly-anticipated movies this year is the second installment of "The Amazing Spider-Man", and Filipino fans need not wait anymore as it is finally playing on theaters starting today.

Fans are excited over the number of villains that Spider-Man would have to battle in the movie, including Rhino, Electro, and Green Goblin.

Followers of the franchise are also eagerly awaiting the development of the story arc of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's lady love, played by  Emma Stone.

People can’t wait to see the real life sweethearts Emma and Andrew Garfield back on the big screen again.

But have producers spoiled the movie's fans about a shocking twist in the end?

Fans were apparently shocked over a set of photos that was released a year ago showing Spidey swinging with Emma who is wearing the exact outfit that Gwen was wearing (black boots, purple mini skirt and a green jacket) when the latter was killed in the comic books.

In the  comic book "The Amazing Spider-Man" #121-122 released in June 1973, the Green Goblin abducts Gwen and she is killed during Spidey's and the Goblin's battle.

The original comic featured a "snap" text next to Gwen Stacy's head in the panel in which Spider-Man's web catches her, however later reprints removed the text.

Fans have speculated that the shock of the fall caused Gwen Stacy's death, as the Green Goblin told  Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #121, "Romantic idiot! She was dead before your webbing reached her! A fall from that height would kill anyone — before they struck the ground!"

The death of Gwen Stacy shocked the American comic book fans. Previously, it had been unthinkable to kill off such an important character - the girlfriend of a title character with a large fan-base.

The story arc, however,  is considered one of the markers of the end of the Silver Age of Comic Books, and the beginning of the darker, grittier Bronze Age.

So will the movie break not just Spider-Man’s heart but the fans' as well? We'll find out soon enough. - Iza Iglesias
