MANILA, Philippines - Comedian Subas Herrero, best known for his stint in the primetime comedy show Champoy, died on Friday due to pneumonia. He was 69.
Reports said the character actor, born Ricardo Wright Herrero, died in his home in Rochester, New York after three decades of performing in the entertainment industry.
Herrero is known for his roles in movies that include Diligan Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa, Pagdating sa Dulo, Shake, Rattle and Roll, Jose Rizal, and many others which displayed his versatility in taking various roles.
At the height of the martial law, he was also part of the group of artists who urged the public to join the demonstrations in EDSA against former President Ferdinand Marcos.
He also joined in the protest against former President Joseph Estrada in 2001, which ousted the former leader. Estrada was Herrero's co-star in two films.
Herrero, who previously recovered from stroke, had five children.
