CCSC opens door to air rifle shooting

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Sports Commission's  capacity to develop a highly effective grassroots program in as many sports possible will further be tested as they accepted the task of developing air rifle shooting here.

CCSC chairman Edward Hayco has earlier said an LGU (local government unit) should welcome even the "most ridiculous" or unpopular sport as long as they have the right individuals or group to handle it.

With their archery program taking off well, CCSC now welcomes air rifle shooting.

Hayco assured that this sport is safe for the kids as youth tournaments have been done in other countries for a long time already.

"After we took on archery, we're ready for another challenging sports like air rifle. It's very safe. Single shot. The kids will only practice using laser light targets. Still, it's only when they are responsible and have enough practice that we will let them handle the air rifle," said Hayco.

This project is again supported by the Department of Education-Cebu City and the Philippine Sports Commision.

The ideal age for one to indulge in this sporting endeavor is between 11 to 20 years old.

"Calmness and intellect are virtues that are required for an air rifle athlete," said Hayco.

So far, a total of 15 air rifles have been turned over by the PSC through Spanish coach Miguel Tajuelo to DepEd-Cebu City and CCSC's grassroots-in-charge Gayle Dico.

Right now, CCSC and DepEd are in the process of identifying schools that will serve as custodian of one riffle each.

By May, 60 volunteer PE teachers will undergo an intensive training about the sport. After which comes the training of athletes.

Once there will be enough air rifle athletes, a monthly tournament will be staged at the Cebu City Sports Institute.

"We aim our sight for a try on the 2020 Olympics," said Hayco.  (FREEMAN)
