CEBU, Philippines — Barili swept its matches for the third straight week in the 1st Mayor Inocentes Cabaron Inter-Town Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the Moalboal covered court.

The spirited Barili spikers are the only team to stay perfect at 3-0 in both men’s and women’s divisions, making them one of the favorites to claim the P50,000 champion’s prize of the event staged for the annual feast of San Juan Nepomuceno in the resort town.

In the men’s class, Barili subdued Badian 28-26, 25-11, while its women’s team needed three sets before edging Badian, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21.

John Cydric Bayang and Rachaelus Nemeno figured prominently in Barili’s third win in a row, while Mylene Yuson, Aime Piape, and Analie Canete shined brightly in the distaff side.

Meanwhile, host Moalboal suffered contrasting fates with its men’s team going 3-0 and its women counterparts crashing to their first setback after a rousing 2-0 start.

Bannered by playing team captain Dave Cabaron, Moalboal took the first set, 25-21, and then leaned on Christian Jake Tabacon’s strong serves to finish off Dumanjug, 25-23.

On the other hand, Chrisha Omagac gave Moalboal an early 8-2 lead to take the first set, 25-14, against Dumanjug before Marlyn Yucada gave the visitors an 11-2 edge en route to a 25-17 win in the second set.

In the decider, Juliana Gabales sparked a Moalboal rally to erase a 20-16 deficit and make it 20-20 but Yucada delivered the goods leading to Dumanjug’s thrilling victory.

Dumanjug improved to 3-0 in the women’s category, while Moalboal dropped to 2-1.

The tournament will take a break this weekend in observance of the Holy Week and will resume action on April 6.
