USPF belles bounce back

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - After an opening day loss, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) belles got back in track as they registered twin victories yesterday in the 7th Shakey’s Girls V-League National Finals dubbed as “Tournament of Champions” in Tacloban City.

The Jordan Paca-mentored USPF trounced host, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) of Tacloban City in dominating fashion, 25-13, 25-13.

However, USPF had to pass through a three-set thriller before fending off Davao City National High School, 25-10, 22-25, 25-18.

The triumph was courtesy of veterans Jinky Garridos and Cyd Demecillo with strong backing from rookies Charie Mae Liaz, Maria Niña Fernandez, Sheena Quiño and Shyrra Cabriana.

Despite having no reinforcements in this five-day national volleyball event, USPF still managed to show exemplary performances with a 2-1 win-loss record and still aims to earn a semifinal slot.

“The girls really strived hard to cover up their first day loss against USLS. I’m glad that they were able to recover again and was able to adjust already especially in their floor defense and team work,” Paca said.

Shakey’s GVL organizers encouraged the regional representatives to field in the best players of the region who will compose the team but USPF failed to have this opportunity as his reinforcements including Athena Sucalit and Grethcel Soltones of PNHS and Excel Ignacio of Don Gerardo National High School, backed out in the last minute.

“Even if we don’t have any reinforcements at all, I would still trust my players even if most of them are still new. This would serve as an exposure for them at the same time they could apply what they’ll learn to their next competitions,” Paca added.

The other day, USPF had a bad start as it kneeled before the University of St. La Salle (USLS)-Bacolod in straight sets, 25-18, 25-18.

After its defeat to USLS, Paca admitted that they will surely face tough opposition against the University of Sto. Tomas and defending champion, Hope Christian School.

The Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF)-sanctioned sporting event is supported by Mikasa, Toby’s Sports, Dunkin Donuts and Metro Sports. (FREEMAN NEWS)
