Massacred

FULL POINT - Nimrod Quiñones -

Beating the opponent by 39 points is not exactly something new to us.  Some sportswriters might call it a massacre, but I say it was not.  It wasn’t a massacre at the Boston Garden yesterday because the Celtics beating the Lakers by a margin of 39 points to clinch the NBA title was worse than a massacre.

But let us not rub salt on the wounds of those who rooted for the Lakers.  I might get lynched by some of them if not ran over if they see me crossing the street.

I’d just like to say that I’m glad the series is over so we can all get on with our lives Lakers fans or not.  I belong to the group that’s not, so I’m happy the Celtics won.

Now, I’ll write about golf where I’m sure I won’t get hurt unless a Lakers fan would hit me with an errant drive.

The 2nd Y101 Corporate Cup tees off today and yesterday afternoon’s opening ceremonies somewhat gave us an idea on what to expect for the tournament.

Joseph Stevens, who is one of the organizers, however told me that it was just a sampler and there would be so many things (take note, not just some things) more exciting in tomorrow’s awards ceremony.

There’ll be a lot of raffle prizes for sure, but then there would be more than raffles said Joseph.  This makes me think hard, but there’s actually only one way to know what that really is – by attending the awarding ceremony.

If you haven’t registered though, you might not get an invite.

We’re not exactly tired of golf as there are many more events that are scheduled for the next few weeks.

One event that seems to be getting a lot of attention is The View Invitational of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, which is taking place on July 3 to 6.

This is a 36-hole member-guest event and the entry fee is only P2,500 per player, which is so much lower than most entry fees that we pay for major events.

The giveaways for all participants are a pair of Adidas golf shoes, which could be the reason why the slots are going fast.

Non-members of the club can contact the registration counter so they can be paired with members, who have no partners.  The organizers have decided to become some sort of match makers so that we can get more people to join.

The sports events for the University of the Philippines Centennial celebration seem to be getting a lot of positive feedback.

The other day I talked with Jowil Carvajal, who is helping organize the seven-a-side football tournament.  My brothers in the Tao Brotherhood and Sisterhood are interested to join and I hope we can come up with a complete team as many of us are UP High School alumni.

The golf tournament, which they asked me to put together, has also slowly gained interest.  So far those who I have talked to and have somehow confirmed to join are Dr. Peter Mancao, Atty. Nilo Seno, Rodin Mangubat, Evans Tumaliwan, and a few others.

I purposely did not put the classes of these players because age doesn’t matter for us hehehe.

Those interested to take part in the 18-hole contest can send email to [email protected].

MILESTONE: I’d like to wish my grandfather Silverio Espina Lebumfacil a very happy birthday tomorrow.  I visited Lolo Siling the other weekend in Toledo City, which is something I hope to do more often.

Belated birthday greetings go to my high school batchmate Mark Mancao, who turned a year older yesterday.

  More power!
