Be a good example

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The final two days of competition in the 11-a-side tournament for the 54th Founder’s Day of the Don Bosco Technology Center was played over the weekend.

Although the weather wasn’t really so bad, the two fields inside DBTC that were used for the games were so muddy, but it looked like the players in the 12-under and 17-under categories did not really mind that much.

After months away from competition as a soccer dad, I was back on the sidelines again with parents from the other teams and it just felt like old times although there were many new faces.

The parents gathered were not only those from Cebu, but also from the Colegio de Sta. Rita-Recoletos of San Carlos City, Negros Oriental.

If there is one thing in common that I saw among the parents of the kids from DBTC, Sacred Heart School-Jesuits, Cebu International School, and CST-R, it is the desire for our children and their team to do well.

While I admire those parents who, despite their very tight schedules, would find time to be with the kids at the game, I hope that they would also bear in mind that their presence alone is not enough.

Being there and following the rules with regards to vices is also important as we try to guide our kids to being better citizens.

Sometimes, I have noticed that there are parents who still can’t get over their once being naughty school boys or maybe neighborhood toughies, and would always like to display their wild side even in the presence of children.

Obviously, that is not being a good sporting parent and I hope that we all contribute to a better environment for our kids when we go to the games.  Let’s be good examples.

I wrote last week that the Coral Invitational, is the first of many member-guest tournaments of golf clubs around the country every year, I am very wrong.

I actually realized my mistake only last Sunday when I had a brief chat with Lolot Neri, wife of my friend Jay-jay, who told me that he was in Bacolod for the Sugar Tee.

It just shows that I am not anymore as much involved golf as I was in the poast, but today, the Coral Invitational will be teeing off at the Cebu Country and I wish all participants all the best.

I hope the weather would hold too, but based on my experience, it never fails to rain when I get my car washed.  Sorry guys, I had it washed yesterday on the way to the office, but then I am also hoping to break out from the carwash jinx.

MILESTONES: I greeted Police Sr. Supt, Augusto Morales Marquez, Jr. a happy birthday two days too early.

So, I am repeating it today.  I am wishing the famous squad leader of the Cebu Squad, who turns a year older, a very happy birthday.

Last Sunday, I was one of the godparents in the Christening of Vincent Gabriel Morelos Avanzado, son of my high school classmate Dr. Vicente Avanzado, Jr. and his lovely wife Grace.

The baptism also coincided with the 40th wedding anniversary of Nestor and Ging-ging Morelos, the parents of Grace.
