La Salle needs more golfers

FULL POINT - FULL POINT By Nimrod Quiñones -
The rivalry of all rivalries in Philippine schools will once again have the fairways and greens of the Cebu Country Club as a venue to settle who has better alumni golfers.

The much-awaited Ateneo-La Salle Golf Tournament will take place on September 14 and 15 with the Ateneans hoping to again beat the Green Archers in a competition that they have dominated the past three years.

Will this be the year that La Salle can claim the bragging rights? Will the Blue Eagles once again lord it over considering their huge manpower advantage? These are questions that seem to already have answers, but can still be settled during the tournament.

Thought the tournament runs for two days, players can have the option to play only one round. If he plays two, his best round will be counted.

Entry fee has been pegged at Php 1,500 for those who will play only one round and Php 2,500 if you wish to play an extra round.

With a severe manpower lack, the La Salle team is now recruiting players to fill up its roster. Dondi Joseph, Cebu Chapter President of the De la Salle Alumni Association is calling on all those who spent at least a school year in a La Salle school to step forward and join the team that will be skippered by San Remigio Councilor Nino Bascon.

I heard from a reliable source that the Ateneo team led by John Cheu is a little worried about what La Salle will pull this time considering how the Green Archers shot down the Blue Eagles during a dual badminton tournament a couple of months ago thanks to players from Andres Soriano Memorial College (School) in Lutopan, Toledo City.

We're now also asking fellow La Sallians from Toledo to sign up for the golf tournament and so far a few have expressed their intent like Dr. Tony San Juan and Dr. Rey Dira. Of course Balamban Councilor Dave John Karamihan, who came from La Salle Toledo before moving to UP High School then DLSU, will also be playing.

Those who wish to join can contact Dondi, who unfortunately cannot play due to a recent surgery, through [email protected] or 0918-9339567. You can also drop by Darras + Bowler, which Dondi owns, and buy a few bottles of wine so we can celebrate your being a part of the team. As of this writing, La Salle has 18 players confirmed and that is still a far cry from the 30 we need, so sign up now.

The Blue Eagles squad really doesn't face much of an uphill battle in terms of getting players since those who went to Jesuit schools like Sacred Heart School for Boys (now Jesuits) are qualified to play for the Ateneans.

The competition will be by age bracket so the teams need to field as many players as possible per age group to get maximum points and claim the overall title.

The run up to the tournament is already exciting. Wait until the battle starts and you'll see how exciting this can get. I hope to be in the same flight with Bobby Lim again and see if he fares better on the bunkers of hole No. 5.
