Internet signal boosters to be installed in Cebu City

Sanden J. Anadia - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City government will implement the so-called Next Generation Network (NGN) project in all 80 barangays to boost internet signal, especially in remote areas.

According to the chairman of the city council's committee on information and communication technology (ICT), Councilor Edgardo "Jaypee" Labella II, he understands the problem of sluggish internet signal in some areas of Cebu.

“Ang NGN kay mopa-enhance sa signal, gusto nato nga mabutangan niini ang 80 ka mga barangays sa Cebu City,” said Labella.

He said that in order to help achieve the direction of the city to be similar to Singapore, it is necessary to strengthen the internet.

"Sa pagbisita nato sa ubang nasud, grabe jud kakusog ang ilang internet didto. Gusto ta nga mao sad na ang mahitabo dinhi sa atong lugar,” Labella added.

In the report of Mayor Michael Rama's assistant on special projects, Ramil Ayuman,  the  target of the  gradual installation of NGN in the barangays is second quarter of this year.

The timeframe for them to finish installing the same in is one and a half year.

In the first phase of installing this technology, they will prioritize mountain barangays since these are the common areas with weak signal.

Some of those who will be benefited by this project are the students since it is very useful in their research and school activities.

It will also help in achieving smooth communication during emergencies.

The signal will remain during calamities like typhoon because of the said technology.

"Kun dunay mga kalamidad sama sa bagyo, dali ra nga makontak ang disaster team kay magpabilin ra man ang signal," Labella said.

During and in the wake of natural disasters, the signal is usually affected, but through NGN, the signal will never be lost.

This type of technology will be placed in each barangay and has a coverage of 100 kilometers radius per unit. — JMD (FREEMAN)
