Religious statues at Argao church defaced

Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Two religious statues at the Saint Michael Parish Church in Argao town, southern Cebu were desecrated by an alleged mentally-ill man.

The statue of St Raphael the Archangel inside the compound was destroyed, while the glass that encased the image of St. Michael the Archangel, the town’s patron saint, was also shattered.

Police Staff Sergeant Howard Maynopas, desk officer at the Argao Police Station, said it was reported to the station yesterday morning after church workers discovered the damaged statues.

Police Corporal Anthony Deparini, assistant operations of Argao Police Station, said the suspect, a 40-year-old man with history of mental disorder, was identified by a barangay tanod (village watchman).

The suspect, Deparini said, admitted to committing the crime.

“Niangkon man pud siya nga siya nagbuhat pagpangutanan sa atong police officer,” said Deparini.

He said a settlement is being arranged between church officials and the family of the suspect.  — KQD (FREEMAN)
