CEBU, Philippines — All municipal and city officials in the Province of Cebu are now covered in the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) group accident insurance of the Capitol.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia made the announcement during her recent visit to Camotes islands where she distributed assistance from the provincial government.

“For the first time, atong mga municipal officials ato na usab giapil sila karon sa atong coverage sa GSIS group accident insurance,” Garcia said.

Mayors, vice mayors, and councilors now join the barangay health workers, animal health aides, nutrition scholars, daycare workers, captains, tanods and other barangay officials who are already enrolled in the insurance program.

The mayors have insurance coverage worth P500,000 while the vice mayors and councilors are worth P400,000 and P300,000, respectively. Garcia also announced that she had increased the coverage for barangay workers. From P100,000, barangay captains are now insured with P200,000 coverage.

Barangay kagawads now have P150,000 insurance coverage from P60,000. The BHWs, BNS, BAHAs, daycare workers, tanods, barangay secretaries, and treasurers are now insured with P100,000 from P50,000 coverage.

The governor said that 10 percent of the insurance plan can be reimbursed if they are hospitalized. Earlier, Garcia said that giving insurance to the barangay frontliners is the Capitol’s way to support them in case they will meet accidents in the line of duty.

The governor showered over P100-million worth of projects during her two-day visit in Camotes islands over the weekend. Garcia led the groundbreaking of several projects in Camotes including the 4.2-kilometer Calmante-Puertobello Road Section (Phase II) worth P57,997,260; Poro-Alta Vista Road Section worth P30,285,673.52 to be completed in five months; San Francisco-San Isidro Road Section worth P11,977,062.71 to be completed in about three months; and the 1-km Barangay Pagsa Road Section worth P11,247,364.50 that will be done in a month.

Aside from road projects, a facility for hazardous waste at the Ricardo Maningo Memorial Hospital in San Francisco town is also set for construction. The project is worth P1,889,520.38.

Other projects are a public restroom with rainwater tank in Lake Danao Park worth P954,018.97 and a P24.8-million worth level III water work system in Poro town. The water system will benefit around 2, 000 households in Barangays Teguis, Mercedes, and Esperanza. — FPL (FREEMAN)
