CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu Governor Gwendolyn “Gwen” Garcia is planning to invite Central Visayas’ governors to a one-day summit to discuss how to revive the ailing tourism industry in the region.

“We could have this inter-province tourism program. We are closely watching the thrusts of our neighboring provinces and the other three governors,” Garcia said in yesterday’s press conference at the Capitol.

The governor said she wants to discuss and plan a “holistic and consensual” tour program with Governors Arthur Yap of Bohol, Roel Degamo of Negros Oriental, Zaldy Villa of Siquijor and their respective tourism officers.

The program, Garcia said, is seen to benefit the region’s tourism industry, which is suffering from economic downturn due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The schedule for the tourism and trade and industry summit is yet to be finalized.

Earlier, the governors in Region 7 agreed to meet on August 12 in Siquijor to discuss the concerns on tourism and the reopening the regional economy, but the meeting did not push through.

The province of Cebu is now under the modified general quarantine. It already started reopening the tourism sites, including the Bojo River Cruise in Aloguinsan town in midwest Cebu and the Bantayan Island in northern Cebu. — KQD (FREEMAN)
