Gardening competition winners in Daanbantayan feted

CEBU, Philippines —  Individuals, households and groups in Daanbantayan town in northern Cebu were feted for gardening amid the pandemic.

Dubbed as Sugbuanong Busog, Luwas ug Himsog (SUGBUsog) Program, it aimed at giving families an opportunity to be productive and self-sufficient by engaging them into vegetable gardening.

There were 86 entries both for the purok level and household level. Each of which comprises two categories—containerized gardening and backyard gardening.

An evaluation and monitoring team was created through an executive order issued by Mayor Sun Shimura.

The team was tasked to assess the garden based on a number of criteria that include plant quality, garden creativity and innovativeness, skillful utilization of existing resources and use of recyclable materials.

The first round of evaluation happened last June 6 to 10, 2020, trimming down 86 entries to 22.

They competed in the second round of evaluation held on July 13 to 17, 2020. The top 3 gardens for each category were then selected.

The top 3 winners for the household level under the containerized gardening category were Elvie Mission, Chona Pilapil and Martina Sagrado, while for the backyard gardening category were Hedelisa Portes, Maria Juta Initan, and Edelita Arrabis and Ma. Corazon Rosaceña.

The only winner for the purok level under the containerized gardening category was Purok Maabi-abihon of Barangay Tominjao, while the top 3 winners for the backyard gardening category were Purok Nangka of Barangay Bagay, Purok Mangga East of Barangay Malingin and Purok Tambis of Barangay Bagay.

The winners received cash prizes and will qualify for the competition’s district level. KQD (FREEMAN)
