Quarantine decreases city’s garbage volume

Decemay P. Padilla - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The imposition of the General Community Quarantine has also brought good thing not only to the city’s peace and order, but also to the volume of garbage the Department of Public Services (DPS) has collected.

Lawyer Jigo Dacua, head of the DPS, said that they have observed the reduction in the volume of garbage that they have been collecting in the city every single day.

Dacua said that their garbage collection averages about 550 to 600 tons every day, but last Thursday’s hall only reached 420 tons.

Aside from the fact that Cebu City looks deserted recently with imposition of the quarantine, Dacua said that the limited hours and closure of malls, restaurants and other food outlets have been the biggest factor in the decrease.

Dacua also requested the public to properly seal the used masks that they are disposing, so as not to further risk the health and lives of their loaders.

“Nag-provide ta nila og mask.  In fact nag-purchase ta og gloves ug boots, nagpa-advance ta og deliver ana.  But for now, mask pay niabot nato, mao nay nahatag nato nila karon,” Dacua said.

Earlier, the authorities have also seen a decrease in the number of crimes committed in the city after the imposition of the community quarantine.  GAN (FREEMAN)
