Labella to limit Sinulog contingents

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  For this year's Sinulog Festival, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has recommended to limit the number of contingents to less than 30.

Labella made the remarks after he was informed that the number of contingents for the festival on January 19 would reach to 35.

“If we will have more than 30, it will be very very difficult already because it will take so much time,” said Labella.

He said that he made the suggestion so that the event can be finished before 7 o’clock in the evening.

Last year, at least 24 contingents competed in the Sinulog ritual showdown at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Meanwhile, with the influx of tourists and pilgrims coming to the city for the festival, Labella wants the public to remain watchful to avoid any untoward incidents.

He said vigilance is important during this time because there could be some bad elements who would take advantage of the situation.

“While the police authorities, law enforcement agencies are doing their job as they are instructed, we encourage our fellow residents of the city to be extra careful while we enjoy the festivities and, at the same time, take part in the spiritual dimension of the celebration,” said Labella.

“We have to see to it that peace and order will prevail during the entire celebration,” he added.

Labella also asked the Cebuanos in the city to extend hospitality to the guests-tourists who would come to watch the Sinulog Grand Parade and pilgrims who would manifest their devotion to Señor Sto. Niño.

He reminded the participants riding in floats not to throw goodies because it may cause stampede.

He also said that drinking alcoholic beverages within the 300-meter radius of the Sinulog parade route will be prohibited.

The mayor also urged business establishments, such as hotels and restaurants, especially along the parade route, to provide access to people who would like to use their comfort rooms.

Labella mentioned that a personal invitation was already sent to President Rodrigo Duterte.

“I think if plans do not miscarry, we expect the president to be here,” he said. JMD (FREEMAN)
