“No backpacks” in opening Mass

Rowena D. Capistrano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  A “no backpack” policy will be imposed early this morning in the Mass that would be celebrated in front of the Magellan’s Cross at the Plaza Sugbo.

Father Alladin Luzon, OSA, in an interview with The FREEMAN, said this was what the Church and the police hierarchy have agreed to implement today to ensure the safety of those who would be attending.

Luzon said backpacks would not be allowed entry at the vicinity of the Plaza Sugbo where the first mass during the introduction of Christianity in the country was held.

Archbishop Jose Palma will celebrate the Mass that is expected to be attended by officials of the city government and the faithful.

Luzon added that there would be two entry points that would be used, however, they are asking for everyone’s understanding and cooperation that backpacks would be prohibited from 5 a.m. until 8 a.m.

After the Mass, a countdown clock for the celebration of the 500 years of Christianity will be unveiled and a solemn procession from the Magellan’s Cross to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral bringing the Jubilee Cross and the image of Sto. Nino will follow.  GAN (FREEMAN)
