CEBU, Philippines —  The Department of Public Services (DPS) has reported that it has collected more garbage in cemeteries this year as compared to last year.

DPS Head Engineer Joel Biton said that ongoing cleanups were done in cemeteries starting October 28.  However, it has been a struggle to enter and collect waste from the cemeteries since October 31 due to the influx of people.

At the Cabantan Public Cemetery, the DPS had assigned six tricycles to collect the sacks of trashes the metro aides had gathered instead of the provided trucks since the passage ways were filled with people.

“Mas grabe ang mga tao karon, mao sab mas daghan ang basura,” said Biton.

As part of the preparations for the upcoming Kalag-Kalag, trash bins have been placed in cemeteries to provide a proper disposal area.

“Para sa ako dili jud effective ang mga trash bins, kay magpataka man gihapon og labay ang mga tao. Unya sa kadaghan sa basura, matabunan ang mga trash bins,” said Biton.

The DPS expects that, by November 3, clearing of wastes would be easier and efficient since the people have already lessened by then.

The DPS has assigned personnel to guard the hotspot areas to apprehend violators who do not follow the rules on proper trash disposal.

This year, the city has apprehended several individuals for violating the rules not only on the proper disposal of trash but also for allegedly just urinating anywhere.

A fine of P500 or community service was imposed on violators.  GAN (FREEMAN)
