Violence mars elections in Bohol, Negros

CEBU, Philippines — Incidents of shooting, mauling, and brandishing of firearm marred the elections in Bohol and Negros Oriental.

In Barangay Albiga, Siaton, Negros Oriental, suspect Jovencio Abejero Ade allegedly opened fire at police personnel of the town at around 4 a.m. Sunday.

The police personnel, led by Staff Master Sergeant Sherwin Laingo, were forced to retaliate.

The suspect sustained wounds and was immediately brought to a hospital where he is now recovering.

Police recovered a .45 caliber pistol, magazine, three ammunitions, four caliber .45 fired cartridge and a piece of .9mm caliber fired cartridge case.

Police will file charges of alarm and scandal against Abe.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Tangcasan Norte, Loay, Bohol two men identified as Lucas Wate and Michael Gaslang who were on board a motorcycle were waylaid by a group of ten unidentified men onboard a black SUV.

Based on the victims’ accounts, they came from Purok 7 to visit the party supporters of lawyer Hilaro Ayuban, mayoralty candidate of Loay, when they were blocked by the unknown men.

They were allegedly mauled and Wate was shot.

After the attack, the unknown men left and evaded arrest.  Wate was brought to a hospital where he is recuperating.

Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) Director Debold Sinas ordered investigation into the cases.

He could not say yet if the incidents are election related.

“Those are isolated incidents and we cannot count them as election related yet. We still have to investigate,” Sinas said. — MBG (FREEMAN)
