New city traffic system to test-run next month

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Starting next month until February 2019, Taiwan-based firm Leotek will start implementing the intelligent traffic system by installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the intersection of General Maxilom and MJ Cuenco Avenues.

This, after the Cebu City Government, through Mayor Tomas Osmeña, has signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Dyna-Tech Innovation Corp., the authorized representative of Leotek, for the said project.

The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) has chosen the intersection at General Maxilom and MJ Cuenco Avenues for Leotek can hold the two-month test run for the smart traffic system due to the traffic volume in the area.

The city government tapped Leotek in order to improve the traffic system, knowing that traffic has been a major concern at present.

Leotek specializes in ‘Smart Street Lights and Smart City solutions’ involving advanced LED street lights, expandable with various sensors, cameras and others.

With the installment of CCTV cameras, the authorities can monitor and analyze the flow of traffic in the area.

Further, it enables the traffic authorities to implement non-contact apprehensions of traffic violators.

As of press time, Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman on the committee of environment, energy, transportation, communication and other utilities, said Leotek has started installing their system at the intersection yesterday.

He said the test run has no cost to the city government.

In a separate interview, Osmeña said the city government will evaluate the performance of Leotek after the test run.

CCTO will also help in evaluating the performance of Leotek.

Osmeña said the system will be implemented in Cebu City if the trial would be successful.

During the test run, the city will benefit in the reduction of human resources manning the traffic, monitoring the traditional cameras, improvement of the accuracy in monitoring and analyzing traffic behaviors, among others.

Leotek General Manager David Yeh has vowed to deliver good service to the city.

He said it was not their first time to implement the intelligent traffic system. In fact, the system was also adopted in Manila. — GAN (FREEMAN)
