Woman shot dead by partner, tanod kills brother

CEBU, Philippines — A 38-year-old woman was shot dead by her live-in partner in their own home in Barangay Tajao, Pinamungajan Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Recilyn Cedeño, was brought to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) where she died at around 9 p.m. on the same day.

Cedeño and her live-in partner, Jesus Bartolaba, 37, allegedly had a heated argument prior to the shooting.

“Matod pa sa initial nga investigation, adunay nadunggan na naglalis.  Mga pila ka minuto ang nilabay, naay buto na ilang na-dunggan,” Police Senior Inspector Alfredo Kuhay Jr., Chief of the Pinamungajan Police Station, said in a phone interview with The FREEMAN.

Police responded to the area and they were informed that Bartolaba has brought Cedeño to Pinamungajan District Hospital.

At the hospital, the police arrested Bartolaba.

“Actually, iya man gyung giangkon na nag-away sila. Nag-inilugay sa maong armas ug aksidente nga nibuto, naigo sa ulo dapit sa agtang ang biktima.” Kuhay revealed.

Cedeño was then brought to VSMMC but she later died.

Police revered from the crime scene a .357 caliber revolver with three bullets, one empty shell of the same revolver and two bullets of a .38 caliber revolver.

Bartolaba admitted that the gun is not licensed and he is keeping them for thieves who steal chicken from his farm.

Bartolaba is detained in Pinamungajan Police Station.

The police are still waiting for the woman’s relatives from Cagayan de Oro to know if they will file charges against the suspect.

Meanwhile, in Bantayan town, a 39-year-old village watchman was arrested after he allegedly hacked his older brother to death in Barangay Tamiao Saturday evening.

The police identified the suspect as Roberto Conag.

Police Chief Inspector Florendo Fajardo, Bantayan Police Chief, said Roberto has been keeping old grudges against his brother identified as Rolly Conag, 44.

“Tini-threatened po ng biktima ang kapatid nya pati pamilya niya (suspect) na papatayin at sabi pa ng suspect noong bata pa sila until now minamaltrato pa rin siya ng kapatid niya,” said Fajardo in a text message.

Prior to the hacking, Roberto was drinking with his friends in the residence of their cousin when Rolly arrived and without any reason, slapped Roberto.

Rolly also tried to stab Roberto with a broken glass but Roberto evaded.

Roberto, who was already angry, went home and took his 18.5-inch bolo and hacked his brother three times in the head.

Rolly brought to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

“Napupuno na po siya at mas maganda pa raw na maunang mamatay ang kapatid kaysa kanya,” Fajardo added.
