CEBU, Philippines - The P79 million Cebu City North District Hospital building of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center was inaugurated yesterday by Representative Raul del Mar, author of the law that enabled the expansion of the hospital's facilities to accommodate more patients.

The four-story building has a 130 bed capacity.

Del Mar said the building is constructed within VSMMC because of the availability of medical personnel and facilities.

The hospital aims to accommodate more patients from outside Cebu City, especially the marginalized sector that cannot afford proper health care.

Del Mar clarified that even residents in the city's South District can be accommodated.

Department of Health-7 Director Jaime Bernadas who attended the inauguration said additional personnel will be provided so that the hospital can cope with the workload.

Bernadas said they are working on the development and reinforcement of peripheral hospitals to cater to province from other provinces.

"Development of peripheral hospitals kay Vicente Sotto alone dili gyud niya kaya ang population sa Region 7," he said.

He said they are also working on expanding provincial and district hospitals, Rural Health Units (RHU), and birthing centers to de-clog VSMMC.

"Didto na unta to maserbisyohan sa atong mga birthing units ug sa atong mga peripheral hospitals aron ang maabot sa Sotto kato nang for tertiary care," Bernadas said.

He said childbirth only requires primary care, which can be provided by peripheral hospitals. (FREEMAN)
