CEBU, Philippines - Her story isn't new but 24-year-old Grace Escrupolo of Cebu City has joined many in the world who have proven that physical disability is not a hindrance to success.

Escrupolo who was born with her limbs not developed fully emerged winner in the province-wide art festival, the 10th Special Children Disability Day, which gave her the opportunity to have her painting presented at the 14th International Handicraft Competition in South Korea. There, her work was adjudged third.

She is scheduled to leave for the country on November 24 to receive her award. She said he could not be happier to be given the opportunity and recognition.

The art festival that took place last September 2 was organized by the Korean Philippine Educational and Culture Exchange Corporation in cooperation with the Cebu Provincial Government.

Dr. Choi Hoon Young, president of the Korea Philippine Educational and Cultural Exchange Corporation,  said the organization supports programs that would give persons with disabilities (PWDs) the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents.

Dr. Julieta Jeruta, regional director of the Department of Education-7, said it is DepEd's advocacy to provide equal opportunities and services to PWDs in their educational pursuits.

She said the art festival is an avenue for DepEd to promote awareness of its special educational programs.

Two other PWDs who participated in the art festival will also be sent to Korea - Jane Marie Empemano who excelled in handicraft - and Brent Jon Villanueva who excelled in origami.

Marciana Gabutan, special education teacher and coordinator of Lipata National High School in Minglanilla town, said she is proud of her students' achievements.  (FREEMAN)
