At father’s wake: ‘Mentally ill’ man stabs brother dead over slipper

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A man died after he was repeatedly stabbed by his elder brother at the wake of their father in Barangay Putingbato, Toledo City on Tuesday morning.

Orland Belsis, 27, died of stabbed wounds on his back allegedly perpetrated by his brother Marlon Belsis, 33, who was reportedly mad at him.

As per initial investigation, the two were seen by their elder sister eating breakfast at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

They were all in the house for the wake of their father who died before Christmas.

While the two were eating, the sister said, the elder brother allegedly suddenly stabbed his younger brother to the back without any provocation.

Some family members and relatives attending the wake scampered, fearing that they would be stabbed too by the suspect, while some brought the wounded victim to Toledo City Hospital.

The suspect was arrested by responding policemen.

Due to the gravity of the wound, the victim was referred to a hospital in Cebu City.

He was being ferried to the city when he died along the way.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect is said to be having a mental problem as claimed by the family.

He was allegedly mad at his younger brother after the latter used his old slipper to burn firewood.

The unsuspecting victim was eating with his elder brother without any idea that the latter was angry at him until his brother stabbed him.

The suspect is now detained while the family has yet to decide whether or not to sue him. — Bryner L. Diaz/NSA (FREEMAN)
