Boy skips classes, run over by truck

CEBU, Philippines - An 11-year-old boy who skipped his class was killed when a garbage truck ran him over at the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill in Cebu City on Monday morning.

 

Geriz Castañares, a scrap metal scavenger, skipped his Monday class to help his parents gather scrap metals in the landfill.

He was hit by the garbage truck driven by Amancio Menisterio, 57, at about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Manuel Tagaan of the Traffic Record Section said that Amancio alleged that Castañares tried to board the garbage truck.

"Nikapyot kuno ni siya," Tagaan said.

The victim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital due to severe injuries he sustained.

Amancio was invited by the City Traffic Division after the incident but the family showed no interest in filing a case against the driver.

 Meanwhile, a drunken man died after he was struck with a stone in the head by unknown assailants in Sitio North Guinabasan, Barangay Tubigagmanok in Asturias, Cebu.

The victim was identified as Arsenio Buhawi Narra of sitio Sangi of the said barangay.

Prior to his death, the victim had a drinking session at 11 p.m. on Sunday with his cousins.

After a while, the victim asked to leave for a while to urinate but failed to return.

Later, he was found dead by a concerned citizen.

Asturias police's background check on the victim showed that he was involved in different burglary incidents in the area.

In Cebu City, a certain Richard Espinosa, 35, was drinking with his friends in Sitio UBCA 3, barangay Quiot-Pardo when he was stabbed to death at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday.

The suspect, Allen Tomarong, 32, was arrested by barangay tanod chief Severino Cabellon who responded to the alarm. – (FREEMAN)
