CEBU, Philippines - A new regional director of the fisherfolk in Central Visayas was installed yesterday to carry out the concerns of the fisherfolks around the region.

Wilfredo Reyes took his oath before Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regional director Inres Bojos at the BFAR office.

The oathtaking was witnessed by BFAR assistant director Allan L. Poquita and former fisherfolks regional directors Juanito O. Obispo and Rogelio Amatorio.

The oathtaking was done in line with the celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month. “This is done in due recognition of fisherfolks and their contribution to the economy,” Poquita said.

Bojos said that the oathtaking is also to show that the government and the fisherfolks are in good terms. “The fisherfolks were able to realize that BFAR has been doing something for them,” he said.

In an interview, Bojos said that the main job of the regional director is to listen and hear the problems of the fisherfolk around the region. The regional director then report to BFAR the concerns of the fisherfolk and BFAR will see what they can do about the problem.

Bojos said that this partnership has been going on for six years now and said that it is very effective. “It is very effective kay naa tay direct leader sa provinces,” he said.

Bojos added that other than a regional director, there are also provincial directors. He said that their direct partnership with the fisherfolks has led to the increase of fish production in the region. Bojos added that having regional directors is unique to Region VII.

Amatorio, on the other hand, said that having regional directors help fisherfolk by way of facilitating organizational formation, livelihood trainings and capability trainings to the fisherfolk.

Reyes said he already has project proposals that can help fisherfolk. He also said that starting today he will start his travel to check the fisherfolk around the region.

Fisherfolk regional directors are not paid to do the job. “They only get reimbursement for their travel expenses.” – (FREEMAN NEWS)
