Suspected NPA member posts bail

CEBU – The suspected New People’s Army member who was arrested by police and military agents last week for her alleged involvement in the killing of four soldiers in Carmen town in 2002 was allowed by the court to post bail after finding that the evidence against her is weak.

Dorothy Paraiso, 44, a native of Asturias town, was already freed from detention after posting a P100,000 bail bond for her temporary liberty. Her case is now being heard before the Regional Trial Court in Danao City will continue.

Dennis Abarrientos, secretary general of the militant group Karapatan, said RTC Branch 25 Judge Edito Enemecio heard last Friday the motion for bail of Paraiso and was convinced by her lawyer that the case against her client is weak.

Although rebellion is a non-bailable case, the Rules of Court allow a judge to grant bail for the accused if he determines that the evidence presented before the court is not so strong.

The prosecution said the day before the attack on a military detachment in barangay Caurasan, Carmen, Paraiso conducted a surveillance of the area to determine the strength and capability of the soldiers.

 “Maayo unta og makakat-on og leksyon ang mga polis ug militar nga dili g’yod unta sila magpataka lang og himo-himo’g mga ebidensya. Kun ibutang nato nga didto si Paraiso duol sa detachment sa wala pa ang pag-atake, sabton na ba diay nga nag-surveillance?” Abarrientos said.

Paraiso was arrested by lawmen inside her private firm, D’scribe Transcription, along P. del Rosario St.

Killed during the rebel attack of the military detachment were sergeants Buenaventura Hora and Eduardo Mandal, and privates first class Eugenio Quemado and Romy Landrillono. Another Pfc. Adriano Gonzales survived the attack. – Rene U. Borromeo/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
