Impressed of his credentials, Princeton University awarded a Cebuano a five-year doctorate scholarship in English including full tuition for five years that the recipient will be in the prestigious American university.

Awarded the scholarship is John Labella, brother of Councilor Edgardo Labella, who earlier was also recipient of the Fullbright Scholarship Program. Labella is admitted to Princeton's doctoral program in English.

A letter from William Gleason, Associate Professor of English and Director of Princeton's Graduate Studies confirmed Labella's admission.

"I am delighted to offer you admission to the doctoral program in English at Princeton University, supported by a fellowship from the Graduate School...We received some 275 applications, and are seeking an incoming class of 10 students. Your credentials strongly impressed us, and we hope you will decide to continue your studies at Princeton," the letter reads.

Aside from admission to the university, Labella is also a recipient of the Scribner Prize, a one-time award of $3,000 that would supplement his first year stipend. Aside from his academic stipend, he will also receive annual summer support for each summer of continued enrollment: $3,300 for the first two years and $4,800 for the next three years.

As long as he maintains a good standing, Labella would enjoy the five-year contract that would enable him to teach in his last two and a half years in the university to complete a dissertation. Princeton students are also eligible for funds to enable travel to conferences or collections.

This "system of table, generous support" gives Princeton students "a high rate of completion and advancement to profession jobs" with the university's PhD's accepting tenure-track positions at a wide range of colleges and universities in the United States including Brown, Carleton, Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, Trinity, Penn, Wesleyan, and Yale. - Joeberth M.
