Jojo Gubalane's Second "Transfiguration"

Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Featuring a varied range of subjects, themes and creative styles, Jojo Gubalane's third solo show, at the third level of Paseo Marina of the Ayala Center Cebu, reminds viewers that the well-worn groves of habit can be a dangerous thing for artists.

Titled "Transfiguration II," the exhibit brings close to 40 works together in setting the spotlight on Gubalane's multi-faceted approach in crafting insightfully balanced neo-expressionist works.

Reprising the first "Transfiguration" exhibit's stance in presenting how Gubalane plays with lines, colors, shades and textures, this new Gubalane show features a refreshing lineup of linear-painting pieces that are tinged by process and content oriented-styles.

Merging elements of pop-art with the classic thematic styles inherent in the representational painting form, Gubalane's latest show doesn't try to contextualize art as social commentaries or aphorisms about life; it simply invites viewers to look at art as mirrors of the life's majesty and grandeur.

Executed in seamless methods that are neither off-placed nor off-putting, still lifes, lifescapes and avant garde renditions of everyday objects associated with Cebu are the dominant subjects that are presented in "Transfiguration II" - as perceived by Gubalane's creative sense.

The show opened late last month, and will run until December 29, 2015.
