Daringly Dishevelled

- Stacy Danika S. Alcantara -

CEBU, Philippines - Okay, it's almost the end of the world and when it comes to being a little bit too experimental with style, really, there is nothing much to lose. I mean would you seriously go through Armageddon regretting that you missed out on some key trends just because you chickened out? Not a great option. Really.

This applies to hair trends inasmuch as it applies to your wardrobe. The thing about hair is that you always wear it-even when you go to bed. So it's really no wonder that a lot of people are a lot less experimental on their tresses than they are on say, other things like accessories.

It is for this reason that we dare to push the limits on everyday 'dos with a style that's inspired from the wild animal prints trend we've seen a lot of stylistas rocking in the previous seasons. Couple this with a sheer love for adventure and discovery dusted with a little bit of Victorian flavor and honey, you've got the dishevelled Victoriana 'do straight out from Felicity Brown's Spring 2012 runway.

Felicity Brown's collection in itself was inspired with the same spirit of class and adventure with her entire set taking inspiration from Kathryn Hepburn's Victorian lady adventures in Africa in the movie, 'African Queen.' With her eyes set on bringing key elements of both cultures together and marrying elaborate African neck ornamentation with the intricacy of Victorian tailoring, Felicity echoed this marriage of structure and shape in the hairstyle that stole the show at London's Royal Opera House.

Here's a quick walkthrough on the dishevelled Victoriana straight from Felicity.

1. Prepare your hair with any mousse of your choice and blow dry your strands for extra control.

2. Carefully take a U-shaped portion from the top of the crown to the lower part of the forehead on either side and start sectioning your hair and putting them in place with a clip.

3. Divide the U-shaped into two sections. It doesn't have to be precise. The more natural looking (rough edges and all), the better.

4. Loosely braid both section from the crown, ending it with a plait right at the end.

5. Curl the hair underneath the braided portions with a medium-sized curling tong with each curl done in 1-inch sections.

6. Go through each curl, teasing each section into a rosebud shape beginning at the bottom and mist hair with a hairspray.

7. Pin hair into place with a hairpin that matches your hair color until all ends have been pinned.

8. Incorporate the braids underneath by twisting them back gently off the face and pinning them.

9. Complete the style with a final mist of hairspray to hold it in place.

The 'do goes best with a simple outfit that comes in basic colors so that the focus will be on the 'do rather than on the dress.
