Sheridan Beach Resort & Convention Center: Puerto Princesa's First Green "AAA" Resort

-

CEBU, Philippines - A slate of eco-friendly firsts will be unveiled when The Sheridan Beach Resort & Convention Center opens in Puerto Princesa Sabang, Palawan.

The first environmentally-built “AAA” Resort for Jeco Development and the first for Puerto Princesa, the 96-room Sheridan Beach Resort has been designed to attain Global Eco certification in two distinct categories. The hotel will seek a New Construction certification once it opens, to be followed by Existing Building certification a year thereafter. This dual certification would set a new benchmark for the resorts & hotels in the Philippines. Many Organizations exist like: LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a multi-category green building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Certification is awarded to select properties based on their site sustainability, water efficiency, energy use and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design for a new building or innovation in operations for an existing building.

Among the green innovations of The Sheridan are the following:

A green, vegetated rooftop is planted on the hotel’s restaurant and tourism building to reduce the “urban heat island effect”.  The green roof reflects heat, thus reducing the amount of energy needed for air conditioning.  It also slows rain runoff and insulates the rooftop, keeping the buildings cooler overall.

Water usage is reduced by 35 percent by installing high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, saving 700,000 gallons of water a year. The hotel building uses 30 percent less energy than a conventional hotel through use of ultra-efficient materials and the latest construction technology.

A natural water filtration program is in place to provide and contain purified still and sparkling water.  The system reduces the hotel’s carbon footprint by decreasing its usage of bottled water, thereby reducing the energy and resources needed to transport, store, and dispose of plastic bottles.

Our wood fired stone oven uses sustainable mango wood reducing the need for electricity and gas for cooking in the restaurant. Interior use of low-emitting volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, and adhesives reduces indoor air contamination. All hotel dining and beverage menus incorporate organic, local and 100 percent natural products. The hotel Wellness Center incorporates Eco-Luxe treatments utilizing organic products.

The hotel’s Gift shop offers a selection of organic clothing, accessories, products and education materials. A comprehensive recycling program will be visible throughout the hotel. Environmentally-sensitive cleaning products will be used throughout the hotel. Environmentally-friendly meetings will be a standard in the hotel. All irrigation for hotel plants will utilize captured rainwater from storage tanks.
