Gaccion, Sarines show way in National Match Play elims
MANILA, Philippines — Ally Gacion and Mona Sarines launched their redemption bids in impressive fashion on Tuesday, firing identical one-under 71s to seize a share of the lead after the opening round of the 36-hole stroke play qualifying in the National Match Play Championship at Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac.
While the first two rounds determine only the seedings for the knockout stage, both Gacion and Sarines gained an early psychological edge as they positioned themselves for favorable matchups when head-to-head play begins on Thursday.
Gacion is looking to bounce back after missing the cut in last month's Singapore Amateur Open, while Sarines is determined to recover from a disappointing sixth-place finish in last week's National Stroke Play Championship at Pradera Verde.
Grace Quintanilla, fresh from a breakthrough victory in the Singapore Amateur Open, continued her solid form upon returning to local competition. She carded a 72 to sit alone in third, just one stroke behind the pacesetters.
Nicole Gan occupied fourth place with a 73, while reigning National Stroke Play champion Lisa Sarines settled for a 74, sharing fifth place with Jules Gaerlan. Lisa Sarines, whose campaign is supported by ICTSI, dominated last week's tournament at Pradera Verde, making her one of the favorites entering the week despite her relatively modest opening round.
Brittany Tamayo posted a 75 to remain within striking distance, while Tashanan Balangauan and Precious Zaragosa, who finished runner-up and third, respectively, behind Lisa Sarines at Pradera Verde, struggled with identical 76s.
Lois Lane Go hobbled with a 78, while Jordan Ouano and Marqaela Dy found themselves with plenty of ground to make up after identical 79s.
Only the top eight players after Wednesday's final qualifying round will advance to the women's match play bracket, where every match becomes a do-or-die affair beginning Thursday.
In the men's division, Rolando Bregente turned in the day's best round, scorching the Luisita layout with a 67 to take a one-shot lead over reigning National Stroke Play champion Jet Hernandez.
Hernandez, who cruised to a runaway victory at Pradera Verde, stayed close after a 68, setting up what could be an intriguing battle for the top qualifying spot.
Top gun Shinichi Suzuki also made an encouraging return to national competition, firing a 71 to join Emilio Hernandez in a tie for third, while Manila Southwoods teammate Patrick Tambalque opened with a 72.
Ralph Batican, Ronel Taga-an, Jet Dy and Bobe Salahog all carded 73s.
The top 16 players after the 36-hole stroke play qualifying will advance to the men's match play draw, with seeding expected to play a crucial role as the country's top amateurs battle for the national crown.
