Cebuano to head EO-Phl chapter

CEBU, Philippines - The global network of successful businessmen, the Entrepreneurs Organization, has chosen seasoned Cebuano entrepreneur Steve Benitez to lead the EO-Philippines chapter.

Benitez, founder of the country's largest local coffee shop chain -- Bo's Coffee, is recognized as one of the few fearless Filipino entrepreneurs who managed to compete with international chains.

For Benitez, his coffee chain brand was able to trail blaze with the aggressive expansion path of world's renowned coffee shop Starbucks, in the Philippines.

"I want more Filipinos, especially Cebuano entrepreneurs to be part of EO. This is a community that offers abundant learning, once-in-lifetime experiences, powerful mentoring from fellow members," said Benitez in an interview.

While it’s important to pursue further education in schools on how to be successful in business, and learn the theories and skills as entrepreneurs, EO on the other hand, provides a conducive avenue for entrepreneurs all over the world to "learn from each other" through their actual experiences, added Benitez who is the first Cebuano to head the Philippine chapter since its establishment.

"The best teacher is experience. This is what the organization is all about, we learn from each other, and grow together, " he said.

Benitez has been a member of the 18-year-old EO-Philippines for 10 years. He attributed the success of his business mostly through the mentorship of his fellow members and from the different global workshops and conferences organized by the organization over the years.

Traditionally, membership of EO is only by invitation, as membership requirement is quite high. This time, Benitez said the organization is inviting entrepreneurs to be part of the community, and be empowered in preparing to face the new cycle of growth, and embrace the transformation (of doing business), as they are already confronted by the " threatening" globalization environment.

The EO is a dynamic, global network of more than 9,500 business owners in 40 countries.

Founded in 1987 by a group of young entrepreneurs, EO is the catalyst that enables entrepreneurs to learn and grow from each other, leading to greater business success and an enriched personal life.

In the Philippines, there are a total of 130 members, four of whom (including Benitez) are from Cebu. — (FREEMAN)
