ABS-CBN, GMA dispute ratings lead

MANILA, Philippines -  ABS-CBN Corp. maintained its leadership in nationwide television (TV) ratings in June, while GMA Network Inc. said it was the preferred TV station of urban households in the country in the same month.

ABS-CBN said it continued to dominate the TV ratings game for urban and rural households nationwide as it had an average audience share of 46 percent in June, higher than GMA’s 34 percent, based on data from audience measurement provider Kantar Media.

Kantar Media’s data is based on a nationwide panel size of 2,610 urban and rural homes that represent 100 percent of the total Philippine TV viewing population.

Just like last May, ABS-CBN continued to have half of the country’s households tuned in to its programs during the primetime block (6 p.m. to 12 midnight) in June, compared to GMA’s 32 percent.

The primetime block is considered the most important part of the day for advertisers as this is when most Filipinos watch TV.

Apart from the primetime block, ABS-CBN also won in the morning block (6 a.m. to 12 noon) through an audience share of 43 percent versus GMA’s 31 percent; in the noontime block (12 noon to 3 p.m.) with 43 percent compared to GMA’s 39 percent; and in the afternoon block (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) with 44 percent against GMA’s 38 percent.

It likewise continued to lead in the different parts of the country such as Total Balance Luzon where it recorded an average audience share of 47 percent compared to GMA’s 37 percent; in Total Luzon with 42 percent against GMA’s 37 percent; in Total Visayas with 55 percent compared to GMA’s 28 percent; and in Total Mindanao with 55 percent as opposed to GMA’s 29 percent.

In terms of the 10 most watched TV programs in June, ABS-CBN stayed ahead of GMA as it accounted for all the shows on the list.

Meanwhile, GMA said in a statement yesterday, it remained the most watched TV station in June based on Nielsen TV Audience Measurement’s National Urban TV Audience Measurement which showed it had an audience share of 42.3 percent, higher than ABS-CBN’s 37.6 percent.

Nielsen’s data is based on approximately 900 more homes surveyed compared to Kantar’s.

GMA also said it was still the winner in Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV household population in the country, as it got a 49.2 percent audience share in Urban Luzon, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 31.2  percent.
